Hump Day Inspiration
I have repeated this quote to myself so many times. And let me tell you…I have a lot of experience! So many things in my life didn’t work out the way I wanted. Or I started a project or a job with high hopes only for it to turn out to be a flop. Usually I just felt defeated and embarrassed after this happened. But with distance (and thinking on this quote) I am able to see things a bit differently.
For example, when I started working at Suede magazine as the senior accessories and celebrity sittings editor, I had so many expectations for the job and the magazine. I had taken a big step up from my position before at another magazine as a men’s associate fashion editor. I would have more responsibility, freedom, travel, and work with celebrities as the lead stylist and not an assistant.
Things got kind of hectic at Suede pretty quickly. I spent almost a year living on 4-5 hours of sleep. I was always putting out fires, dealing with temperamental characters, and absorbing the stress and pressure of getting out a magazine. When the magazine folded I was disappointed yet somehow relieved. I wanted my time at Suede to work out a lot different from how it did.
But looking back on that time I see that I am really grateful for my year with that magazine. I gained such great experience as a stylist, the freedom my fashion director gave me taught me how to manage staff, and I got to travel to some amazing faraway places like Morocco on a day’s notice! So looking back I can say, I am thankful for that experience.
